Dr Uju Ogumoh

Dr. Uju Agomoh is the Founder/Director of PRAWA (which is a Security, Justice and Development focused NGO with regional/continental initiatives in several African Countries) and the President, International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) Africa Chapter. She is also the Programme Manager (Speeding Up Project) Component 4.2 Justice for All Programme/Dfid funded Programme in Nigeria and Lead Consultant Police and Human Rights Project (a Swiss Embassy funded Project in Nigeria). She was a Research Fellow at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (2010-2013). Dr. Agomoh is also a member of the Steering Committee of the African Security Sector Network (ASSN); Member Coordinating committee of the Association of Security Sector Education and Training (ASSET); Council Member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT); Board Member International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) 2003 -2011 and served as the Chair ICPA Developing Countries Committee. She has also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (NHRC) and was the Commission’s Special Rapporteur on Police, Prisons and Centers of Detention (2001 – 2008) as well as a member of the Presidential Committee on Prerogative of Mercy Committee of Nigeria (2006 – 2009).

Her current research works and interests include Human Rights Training in Security and Justice Sector Institutions; Oversight Gender and Criminal Justice System; Sustainability of Penal Reform Interventions; Management of Pre-trial Detention, Mental Health and Justice; Prison-based and Community-Based Re-entry Programmes; Prevention of Torture and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims.

Dr Uju Agomoh was a Research Fellow at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nigeria; a Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine in Nigeria, a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where she provided assessment and clinical support to patients, running of individual and group counseling including for drug addicts and related cases.

Dr Uju Agomoh holds an LLb (Hons) degree from the University of London (Queen Mary & Westfield College); a BSc in Psychology from the University of Jos; an MPhil in Criminology from the University of Cambridge; an MSc in Sociology (Deviant Behaviour and Criminology) from the University of Ibadan; an MSc in Clinical Psychology from the University of Lagos; and a PhD in Sociology (Criminology & Prisons Studies) from the University of Ibadan.
