AU WATCH

What We Do

“The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy.”

Charles de Montesquieu, French Philosopher

Politics in Africa is not working for many Africans. Hundreds of millions of Africans have no idea what the AU is, what it does and how decisions are made and taken. At the national and local levels decisions are made for people and communities by the small handful of people that have political power. At elections we replace politicians, but the same ineffective systems and people remain.

AU Watch and its collaborators defend democracy and challenge our political systems to be more open, just, participatory and accountable. We monitor what the AU and its Members are doing, working to promote openness and accountability, safe and credible elections, by collaborating with partners to empower ourselves to have more accountable political systems political, electoral and governance systems. We are committed to supporting our supporters and collaborators to achieve an informed, empowered, peaceful, democratic Africa that is accountable to its citizens.

We harness the power of evidence and ideas through research, analysis, media and communication to confront governance challenges, developing creative responses and creating change.
